When you’re building pipeline in North Dakota, winter weather has the potential to change your plans in a big hurry. On this project, construction ran into the winter months, and we had to build some of the pipeline in below-zero temperatures with snow piling up.
In order to fuse together the HDPE pipe, which requires quite a bit of heat, we actually bought ice fishing tents and built temporary rooms specifically for fusing pipe. The water storage facilities on this job were also a major hurdle, as we built over 5 million barrels of fresh water storage.
This project is also a good example of KLE’s design build services, as the client entrusted us to hire engineers, complete all surveying, and provide a turnkey water pump station and shop building, in addition to the pipeline itself. Despite the challenges, we completed this job on time in the spring of 2019.
